LASG ORGANISES SENSITIZATION ON CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

In an effort to ensure maximum attention towards matters relating to children with special needs, the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs(LASODA), on Wednesday held a sensitisation workshop for children with special needs so as to stop discrimination against the children.

The event with the theme ” Caring for Special needs Children; Our collective responsibility’ took place at the Digital Village, beside Lagos State Fire Station Alausa, Ikeja.

Speaking at the inaugural workshop, the Hon. Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr Segun Daudu, said the present administration in Lagos State under the leadership of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu is making his good promise of ensuring an inclusive governance that would leave no one behind.

Dawodu reiterated the efforts of successive government in Lagos State in showing serious concern about the plight of people living with disability in the state, especially, children with special needs.

He recalled that earlier this year, LA$ODA organised workshop for 300 persons living with disability in three locations across the state, adding that they were duly embowered according to their area of training.

“Also during the recent distribution of Covid-19 palliatives, the association of parents of children with special needs were also not left out of the equation. I can also assure you that many more of you parents, guardians and care givers will become beneficiaries of more opportunities in the near future. Caring for children with special needs; our collective responsibility”, Daudu said.

He, however, urged every stakeholders that has to do with the welfare and well-being of children with special needs to offer their services with commitment, adding that God will ultimately reward all for their efforts.

He stated further that the Care givers of the vulnerable children have been given concerned to be empowered through which they had recently been taken through Symposium and government has remain committed to give them remuneration and special allowance on a regular basis aside of their salaries.

Also earlier at the workshop, the Acting Chaiman of LASODA, Mr Akintunde Oguntoye, said caring for the special needs children is a onerous task before his agency and indeed the whole society as a whole.

He also maintained that government would not subscribe to disengaging the people with disabilities at all public places and its back with the Special peoples law, that Lagos State Governor and indeed his administration appreciate the lives of people living with disability, just as he added that the Governor recognizes their importance and contribution to the socio-political and economic life of the state.

“Let me intimate us at this workshop that everyone is important to this present government and as we would not allow the children to be locked up in the rooms because of burdensome they must be given the necessary attention and encourage to perform optimally in whatever they do”, Oguntoye said.

Highlights of the event includes Psychologists, Therapists discussion on various topics that has to do with acceptance and care for the people living with disability in the society and engaging them at the early age on helpful courses to reduce disability in them.

Others in attendance were Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Education’s representative,Mrs Somoye Olusola,P.S repr.For the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Mr Beko Sobodun and Director for Admin.and Human Resources,LASODA, Mr.Adewunmi Ogunsanya.
